A winter garden turns your terrace or garden into a living space you can use all year round. With the wrong system, however, it can overheat like a greenhouse in summer and suffer from condensation in winter.
1. Thermally broken profiles are a must
Non insulated aluminium profiles create cold bridges in winter and cause condensation. Thermally broken profiles and double glazing are essential for comfort.
2. Glass selection
Solar control and low emissivity (Low-E) glass reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. Laminated glass should be used on the roof for safety.
3. Ventilation
With an opening roof and sliding or folding doors the space can be fully opened in summer. Natural ventilation is the key factor in summer comfort.
4. Structure and drainage
The roof system must be calculated for local snow and wind loads. Proper rainwater drainage through concealed gutters is critical for a long life.
5. Permits and regulations
Condominium law applies to apartments and zoning rules to detached houses. Checking the regulations beforehand prevents problems later.
At Maksem Construction we handle survey, structural calculation, production and installation of winter gardens under one roof.
